The new low noses were mandated partly to prevent cars ramping up over others, but have introduced a far more deadly possibility. Now they could easily 'submarine'under instead turning the drivers head into a perfectly placed crush zone (erm,my words). He has a point

The BBC article on this had someone else pointing out that Newey didn't raise these concerns during the lengthy consultation process, and that the noses ought to shatter rather than submarine.

I'd have thought this is something that could be tested fairly easily by crashing a couple of F1 cars, or mockups, together in a rear-ender and seeing what happens.

I was actually curious about that. I'd rather not have a terrible incident to find out that that is the case. He has a very good point about the batteries as well. When they kick off they will kick off the fuel and it will be all that more perilous for the driver to get out of the car quickly in the event of an accident. I guess this will turn out to either be an interesting season for F1 or a total calamitous fuck show.

I'm not sure how good his point about the batteries really is. The fuel tank is placed where it is because it's very well protected from crashes. Having the batteries there makes sense, because there's no perfect solution.

I do think that the actual fuel cell may very well be more stable than the LiPo or what ever variant of lithium batteries they are going to use. Granted they will be encased in a housing that could probably withstand a stick of dynamite, but still the concern of a high energy density battery fire is there and I would think that you would want that away from the driver and the fuel cell. But I'm not a safety engineer that has special inside information at all.

They should just stop with the stupid nose regulations... Just put a fucking roof over their head ... I know some people think they would look awful, but surely not worse than penis/duck/vagina nose.

I don't suppose they're exactly as robust as the fuel cell, but I think it's the same trade-off that put the fuel cell where it is - more of a problem if it does fail, but better protected in a crash so the chances of failure are a lot lower.

It has been pointed out that Red Bull gained significant advantages in the last two or three seasons by putting their KERS batteries behind the engine, whi8ch is something to consider when evaluating Newey's statements.
